Hawthorne and His Novel Tour
Hawthorne and His Novel Tour
Experience the house tour as it was described by Salem author Nathaniel Hawthorne in his 1851 novel The House of the Seven Gables.
Each year, The Gables partners with local experts, musicians, writers, actors, educators, community artists, and literary, historic, and scientific institutions to create and present engaging and meaningful programming that is open to the public. We seek to explore themes related to our historic site that represent our mission and vision. We honor our past and reckon with our hard histories, acknowledge, welcome, and celebrate our community, and provide support for immigrants and their families in order to make positive change. There is something for everyone to choose from: lectures, performances, specialty tours, kids and family activities, cooking and dance classes, and participation in local festivals. Check out what’s coming up and come join The Gables as we explore history and culture together and create a brighter future!

With the best view of the fireworks in town, The House of the Seven Gables is the ideal spot for July 4th. Members are invited to bring a blanket and chairs, and relax on the seaside lawn.
Join us on July 15 from 1-2 P.M. with your little ones (best for ages 0 - 6) for a fun-filled hour of reading and crafts in our Kids' Cove play area. This event is free, but registration is required.
The House of the Seven Gables has many stories to tell, but we can only tell so many on our usual tour. Join The Gables for a special “Behind the Scenes” tour where you will get into spaces the public generally isn’t allowed, hear some of the lesser-known stories, and enjoy The Gables like few ever have!
This lecture includes a comparison of the opposing personalities of Elizabeth Manning Hawthorne and her 6-year-younger sister, Maria Louisa, with excerpts from personal letters to illustrate their individual qualities.
Únase a nosotros el 29 de Julio de la 1 - 2 pm con sus pequeños (mejor para las edades de 0 - 6 años) para una hora llena de diversión de la lectura y la artesanía en nuestra zona de juegos Kids' Cove.
From the Indigenous women who worked the land to our organization’s founder, women have always been a part of the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion’s history, but not always given the spotlight they deserve. The House of the Seven Gables has created a Women’s History Tour to focus, in-depth, on the many women who have lived and labored in the Mansion.
