The mansion’s last residents, the Uptons, began touring Hawthorne fans through the house in the late 1800s. A daughter of the family, Ida Upton, sold hand-painted “witch cups” and “witch plates” to tourists that were decorated with the earliest rendition of this classic image. Her design has inspired countless variations over the last century.
