ESL Teacher

Reports To: Settlement & Education Programs Manager             

FLSA: Non-exempt

Salary: $31.50 – $34.65

Position Overview:

At The House of the Seven Gables we provide ESL and Citizenship classes to adults in the North Shore area as part of our ongoing commitment to serve our immigrant community. An English as a Secondary Language (ESL) instructor is part of the Settlement Education team who provides instruction to develop language skills with an emphasis on speaking and listening to adult students at the early and intermediate levels of English proficiency.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Deliver engaging lessons that align with the topics and skills delineated in the Settlement curriculum, address the four areas of language acquisition (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).
  • Work with fellow teachers and Settlement & Education Programs Manager to develop, review, and implement effective curriculum, taking into consideration individual student needs, culturally responsive teaching methods and students’ personal experiences.
  • Participate in annual professional development sessions.

 

Preparation, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven success teaching English language learners. Graduate certificate and/or Master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages preferred, but not required.
  • Experience living in another culture and learning another language preferred
  • Familiarity with MS Word, PowerPoint, Google Workspace, Google Classroom, as well as payroll software (can train).
  • Familiarity using technology to enhance learning: Kahoot, Quizlet, YouTube etc. (can train).
  • A sense of empathy and a desire to work with adult students.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including strong public speaking skills needed by a teacher.

 

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Constant use of speech, hearing, and sight abilities.
  • The ability to project voice to a full classroom of up to 25 students.
  • The ability to lift up to 20 lbs to move/transport/deliver program supplies.

 

HOURS OF INSTRUCTION AND COMPENSATION

  • Teaching Schedule: Monday and Wednesday Evening 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, with one hour of prep per class (6 hours per week).
  • $31.50/hr. of instruction plus one hour of paid prep per class (total of 6 hours/week)
