November Lecture at the Gables
Author Captain Michael Rutstein
The World Turned Upside Down: Privateering, Smuggling, and the New Elites that Emerged in America’s Wars of Independence
For close to 200 years, Salem was a center for shipping and trade in New England. Some of Salem’s residents would become the wealthiest in the country because of their
entrepreneurship and risk-taking. America’s War of Independence in the last quarter of the 18th-century would mold a generation of Salem merchants into some of the world’s foremost traders. It would also lead some merchants to take up privateering and smuggling to make their way.
Captain Mike Rutstein of the Schooner Fame, will be at The House of the Seven Gables on November 19th to discuss how the American Revolution affected the maritime
community, and helped to solidify Salem’s identity as a leader in world commerce for years to come.
