Photograph of the Great Chamber in the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion
Description
The Great Chamber was interpreted as “Phoebe’s Room” when the Gables opened in 1910: a reference to Phoebe Pyncheon in Hawthorne’s novel. These images show the room from that time, complete with a beautiful canopy bed that now resides in Hawthorne’s Birthplace.
Note the slight difference in wallpaper pattern between the two images. While paper has changed often throughout the house, earlier curators tried to keep similar patterns in each room. Today the focus for the choice of papers is on historical accuracy rather than interior decoration.
