Description
Nathaniel Hawthorne was appointed office at the United States Consulate in Liverpool, England in 1853 – thanks in large part to his friendship with the newly appointed President of the Unites States, Franklin Pierce. There Hawthorne toured through Great Britain and attempted to rediscover points of interest in his family’s history. Hawthorne wrote Our Old Home (1863) based on these experiences in England, and his journals from this time were published posthumously.
