Community Conversation – New Immigrant and Refugee Visions Film Screening and Discussion
Our September 19 Community Conversations center on two films from New Immigrant and Refugee Visions (NIRV). The two short documentaries provide a unique insider’s perspective on the integration challenges immigrants face and the contributions they make to our culture, economy and social fabric. Michael Sheridan, the Founding Director of NIRV, will provide insight about the makers and subjects. The viewing will be followed by discussions in both Spanish and English.

Rhythms of Respect
Filmmaker and scholar-activist Katsyris Rivera Kientz works closely with the Puerto Rican diaspora in the United States on issues related to Puerto Rican cultural identity. Her film highlights Puerto Rican dancer, musician, educator, and cultural activist, Jorge Arce, who fosters inclusive communities by bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to learn about Caribbean culture.
She’s an American Child
Filmmaker Rafael DeLeon is co-founder of The Latino Support Network and producer of the local TV show Pathways to Integration. His film tells the story of a mother and daughter who have immigrated from the Dominican Republic to Lynn, MA and the dilemma the daughter faces related to identity and legal status.
