This copy of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter was  illustrated by E. Stuart Hardy (Beatrice Evelyn Stuart Hardy), a British artist and author. Hardy’s focus was often the more light-hearted topics of fairies, gnomes and mermaids. These illustrations show a lesser-known Hardy who applied much-needed weight to her depictions of Hawthorne’s famous romance.
