Description

Elizabeth Upton Haywood Eaton, granddaughter of Henry and Elizabeth Upton, is shown here on a tour of the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion in 1987.  Mrs. Eaton gave the Gables many items of her family’s memorabilia. A professional artist, she worked for many years designing greeting cards for companies based in Massachusetts, even serving as art director when her male colleague went to war in WWII (she later lost the position after he returned). In addition to her collection of greeting cards, Betty Eaton donated many of her watercolors and oil paintings to the Gables.

In 1943 while designing greeting cards at the Herman Chilton Company, Eaton convinced her boss to try making cards on pressed tin foil. Click on the example above to see a Get Well card with a paper fold out that she designed.
