Meet our Settlement House Staff

Margo Fijux is the newest ESL teacher on staff for The House of the Seven Gables ESL program. Besides her work here, she teaches at Community Action in Haverhill and Lawrence, and enjoys bartending on weekends.

“I am most proud of the time I spent working toward my master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I’m grateful to have had so many opportunities to understand how valuable language is. I am so lucky to be able to do something that I love and to share my experiences with students.” says Fijux. “I am proud to be able to make real personal connections with them. When I see students gain confidence in their language abilities, it truly gives me a feeling of happiness.”

Fijux is supportive of her students who put in great amounts of effort to learn the English language. “Things that may seem very easy or not that important to someone who speaks English as a first language are the very things that my ESL students take great pride in learning. Seeing them progress and gain confidence is the most rewarding thing in the world, and I never want my students to feel like these successes are not important. I know what it is like to struggle with learning another language, and I always tell my students that I never want them to feel alone or uncomfortable. If I can be a small part of helping them through that, I have done my job,” she says.

When Fijux isn’t working in the community, she loves to travel and take long hikes with her husky. Staying active is important and her adventure buddy is the best!
