Description
In 1935, House of the Seven Gables founder, Caroline Emmerton, chronicled her experience acquiring three 17th century homes including the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, The Hooper-Hathaway House, and the Retire Becket House. Throughout this 61-page text she details the condition of the homes she purchased and what was required to return them to their earlier appearances. Emmerton provides a unique perspective that can only come from a life-long Salem native with strong ancestral roots in the city, often mentioning local legends regarding the houses’ histories.
This text includes numerous illustrations originally drawn by Caroline Emmerton, as well as an Epilogue: “The Legacy of Caroline O. Emmerton.”
