DESCRIPTION:The House of the Seven Gables has many stories to tell\, but we can only tell so many on our usual tour. Join The Gables for a special “Behind the Scenes” tour where you will get into spaces the public generally isn’t allowed\, hear some of the lesser-known stories\, and enjoy The Gables like few ever have! \n  \nThis is a 2-hour tour in which you will be standing and walking on uneven floors\, ducking\, and maneuvering through areas with limited lighting. Hard hats and flashlights will be provided and are required. A waiver will be presented to you upon your arrival. Space is limited\, and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Join Executive Director of the Punto Urban Art Museum\, Saniego Sánchez\, for a walk through history-from the beginnings of Le Pointe through the stories of the French Canadian workers in the mills\, through surviving the Great Salem Fire and the rebuilding of the neighborhood\, to western Europeans immigrants settling in the Point\, to becoming recognized as a National Historic District to a predominantly Latino influenced barrio known as El Punto. \nExplore connections to the culture through the murals\, landmarks\, and architecture while learning interesting historical facts about what has been the traditional home for numerous immigrant groups in Salem. \nThis tour has been specially curated for members of The House of the Seven Gables\, with emphasis on the connection between The Gables’ work and history with immigration and the Salem community. SUMMARY:Manalone: Architect Joseph Everett Chandler and a Queer History of The House of the Seven Gables
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Everett Chandler\, the architect who restored The House of the Seven Gables for Caroline Emmerton\, was an early historian of American architecture. He restored dozens of other important buildings that became museums\, including the Paul Revere House and the Old State House in Boston\, the Royall House in Medford\, the Sargent-Murray-Gilman House in Gloucester\, and the Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens in North Andover. Chandler named his Sudbury house Manalone\, and his immediate circle of colleagues and clients included dozens of queer men and independent women. His diaries reveal their close friendships\, rivalries\, and tragedies. \n  \n> Click here to register <\n  \nAbout the Presenter \nTimothy Orwig is an architectural historian who teaches at Boston College and UMASS Lowell. He earned an MA in Preservation Studies and PhD in American and New England Studies at Boston University\, where his dissertation documented the previously little-known career of Chandler. Orwig is the author of books and articles on New England architecture\, as well as two dozen nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.
