SUMMARY:Enduring Hawthorne Custom House Visit
DESCRIPTION:Salem Lit Fest is excited to bring back Enduring Hawthorne: Ekphrastic Writing. This year we are inviting all of our writers to visit The Custom House and/or The House of the Seven Gables\, the famous spaces that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writing. We hope you will become equally inspired to write\, be it a poem\, short story\, or song! Over the course of two nights\, NPS and The Gables will welcome Lit Fest attendees into their spaces for a tour and Q&A. \n  \nSeptember 3: The Custom House (NPS) 6-8 P.M.\nSeptember 4: The House of the Seven Gables 6-8 P.M.\nSeptember 5: Presentations 6-8 P.M. \nAttendance is free\, but registration is required \n  \n\n> Click here to register for the Custom House Visit <\n  \nOnce you have visited The Custom House and/or The Gables\, we hope you feel moved to create a literary piece of your own that you would like to share with your colleagues and the public. On Friday September 5 we will be hosting an evening for presenting these works\, culminating in a performance of Hawthorne’s The Great Champion\, adapted to folksong by local musician\, Dan Blakeslee\, and accompanied by a crankie created by local artist\, Ben Wickey. \nWe request you register to present\, although time will be set aside for those who decide last minute. Too shy to present your own piece? Don’t worry! Newburyport’s Theater in the Open is graciously providing some of its actors to be on standby to present for you! \nNot presenting? No problem! We invite everyone to attend the presentation and to see how creative our community can be. The event is still free\, but registration is requested.

SUMMARY:Member Event: Visit to The Sargent House Museum
DESCRIPTION:Gables members! Let’s visit The Sargent House Museum in Gloucester together.\nFor over 100 years\, the Sargent House was the home of sea merchants\, patriots\, and community leaders. A fine example of high-style Georgian domestic architecture\, the house was built in 1782. Today\, the Sargent House Museum seeks to engage the public in the life\, times\, writings\, and home of Judith Sargent Murray\, a pioneering advocate of women’s education and equality. Moreover\, the Sargent House Museum seeks to empower women and men\, young and old\, to value women’s equality\, education\, and role in the community for the benefit of the common good. \nIn addition\, we will be able to explore a small collection of original works by the great portrait painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925)\, a descendant of the Sargent family who loved the house and its ties to Post-Revolutionary Gloucester. \nFree for Gables Members. No guests. \nThis event is SOLD OUT. To join the waitlist\, email development@7gables.org\n  \nNot a member? Click here to join.
