SUMMARY:The Gables and Climate Change: What's Next?
DESCRIPTION:Join Gables’ Director of Preservation and Maintenance\, Paul Wright\, and Collections Manager\, Susan Baker as we welcome Barbara Warren\, Executive Director of Salem Sound Coastwatch\, and Kara Babcock\, Associate Principal at Union Studio to review some of the findings from our two-year investigation of the current and projected impacts of sea level rise\, storm surges\, and groundwater on the campus of The House of the Seven Gables. This research was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management\, one of the first awarded to an historic property\, with the goal of providing an example for other similarly threatened sites. \n  \nOver the course of this project\, The Gables partnered with Salem Sound Coast Watch\, Union Studio\, Horsley Witten Group\, and Collins Engineers to collect data on our site\, evaluate and repair coastal structures\, and develop a plan to preserve The Gables and its other historic structures for generations to come. This presentation will offer a brief review of the issues identified and potential solutions to be implemented over time. Wright and Baker will provide background on why we pursued this project\, Warren will speak to the sorts of climate change issues effecting the coastline including and beyond The Gables\, and Babcock will present some of the Gables-specific recommendations for response and mitigation over the next 50 years. \n  \nThis event is free to the public\, but registration is requested. \n  \n> Click here to register <

SUMMARY:Foreign Soil\, Common Ground: Chamber Music at the House of the Seven Gables
DESCRIPTION:The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association as we know it today was established in 1910 and had grown out of the philanthropic work of our founder\, Caroline Emmerton and the Salem Settlement Committee to serve Salem’s immigrant population. Over the last nearly 120 years\, Settlement work has changed with the needs of the groups it serves. While many Settlement Associations closed over the course of the 20th century\, the legacy\, and in many cases the community offerings\, remain. Additionally\, the immigrant groups in Salem\, their stories\, and their contributions have changed\, creating a more colorful and diverse cultural fabric here in Salem and the North Shore. This year’s Community Conversations series will focus on the history of the Settlement movement\, the cultures of the groups with whom we work\, and what Settlement and Salem looks like today. \n  \nImmigrants and refugees have historically contributed to the vast and varied collective of American performing arts\, bringing vibrant talent and traditions from their native homelands to make the United States the cornucopia of cultural heritage that it is today. To celebrate our continuing mission to sustain our Settlement Program\, join us at The House of the Seven Gables for Foreign Soil: Common Ground\, an exuberant chamber music performance that features compositions by seven composers who hail from six countries with populations that have historically emigrated to the United States\, and who themselves left their native homelands to build cultural bridges and lasting artistic legacies through their contributions to the oeuvre of classical music. \n  \nTickets are $65 for the general public and $55 for Gables Members. \n  \n> Click here to register <

SUMMARY:Romancing the Author
DESCRIPTION:Romancing the Author: Literary Tourism\, Biographical Fiction\, and the Afterlives of Hawthorne and Hester.\nThe First Annual Nathaniel Hawthorne Society Lecture with Professor Charles E. Baraw. \n  \nThis talk travels from Hawthorne’s early tales and sketches to Laurie Lico Albanese’s Hester (2022) and Alice Hoffman’s The Invisible Hour (2023).  It asks why we visit the homes and haunts of authors.  What do we seek?  And it explores the intimate relation of literary tourism\, Hawthorne’s art\, and the vibrant tradition of writing after Hawthorne\, the “Afterlives\,” that Hoffman and Lico Albanese invent.  Why have travelers visited Salem in search of Hawthorne for nearly two hundred years?  Why do so many and such varied artists (novelists\, dramatists\, film makers\, and more) animate Hawthorne and his characters in their own works? What does Hawthorne have to do with it?  These are some of the questions that will guide our visit to Hawthorne’s homes and haunts in and around Salem. \n  \nProfessor Charles E. Baraw teaches at Southern Connecticut State University and is immediate Past President of the Hawthorne Society. \n  \n> Click here to register <

SUMMARY:Water Has Memory: Resiliency and Historical Preservation
DESCRIPTION:Join The Gables as we welcome Rodney Rowland\, Director of Facilities and Environmental Sustainability at Strawbery Banke Museum\, for a discussion of some of the greatest threats to Strawbery Banke and how they are being addressed. Strawbery Banke\, much like The Gables\, is a waterfront campus of historic properties\, placing it in a high-risk area for impacts of sea level rise. The museum has been working with the city of Portsmouth\, NH\, University of New Hampshire\, and other colleagues and experts in the climate change and historical preservation fields to assess risk and design adaptation to mitigate potential damage. There is a great deal The Gables – and the city of Salem – can learn from our colleagues in Portsmouth. \n  \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \n  \n> Click here to register <\n  \nAbout the Presenter \n  \n \nRodney Rowland first joined Strawbery Banke Museum\, the living history museum in downtown Portsmouth NH\, as a volunteer in 1976 and joined the staff in 1990. His involvement has always focused on the preservation and long-term sustainability of this important historic site. He is currently responsible for the 37 buildings on the 9-acre site\, overseeing the Facilities\, Restoration and Landscape Departments and is the project manager for various projects. Strawbery Banke is engaged in many projects that may physically extend beyond the museum’s property\, but that impact the future of the museum and engage every one of the visitors to the site.

SUMMARY:Salem to Rome: William Wetmore Story\, Louisa Lander\, Sophia and Nathaniel Hawthorne and Sculptural Controversy
DESCRIPTION:During the 1850s\, American artists and writers formed a community in Rome. Among them were Salem-born William Wetmore Story\, Louisa Lander\, and Sophia and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Story had abandoned his distinguished career as a Boston attorney to become a prolific sculptor. In his Cleopatra and Libyan Sybil\, he sculpted strong\, sensuous\, controversial women and earned international acclaim. Louisa Lander had just begun her career as a sculptor when she met the Hawthornes in Rome. Her provocative marble bust of Nathaniel became a source of scandal and gossip abroad and at home in Salem. \n  \nTickets are $20 for the general public\, and $15 for Gables members. \n  \n> Click here to register <\n  \nAbout the Presenter \n  \n \nPatricia Dunlavy Valenti is Professor Emerita in the Department of English and Foreign Languages at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She specializes in women’s studies\, biography\, and 19th-century literature and is author of five books including biographies of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop and Sophia Peabody Hawthorne. Her current project centers on American expatriates in Rome during the 1850s.
