DESCRIPTION:The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association will be a part of the 2016 17th Century Saturdays program presented by the North of Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau. During this program\, visitors are invited to step back in time and explore Essex County’s extraordinary collection of homes\, buildings\, and artifacts from America’s First Period (1625-1725) of European settlement.  Discover what it was like to live in Essex County during America’s first century as you navigate these architectural treasures.  Join us for 17th Century Saturdays from June through October 2016 on the first Saturday of the month. \nWith regular admission\, visitors will be able to enjoy a guided tour of The Gables\, tour the gardens and grounds\, and view the Nathaniel Hawthorne birthplace. DESCRIPTION:The Gables will once again host friends and family as we celebrate America’s and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s birthday.  Please feel free to bring your own picnic\, blanket\, and lawn chairs for a front-row seat to the City of Salem’s extraordinary fireworks display over the harbor.  A cash bar will be provided from 6:00-9:15pm.  NO outside alcohol is permitted on the grounds. DESCRIPTION:In our Living History Lab at The House of the Seven Gables guests can play both scientist and historian by getting their hands and minds on some fun and engaging experiences from the past. \nIn 1915\, Caroline Emmerton’s Settlement House served the immigrant families living in the neighborhood of the museum.  The children often attended classes that taught household and industrial skills like cooking\, woodworking\, sewing and gardening.  They and other family members also joined theatrical and musical clubs offered through Emmerton’s charity. \nCome join us on Saturdays and Sundays beginning July 2nd\, where our ‘lab experiments’ will feature hands-on activities based off these Settlement House programs offered in the early 20th century.  You might practice your sewing\, work on your paper folding skills or play 1915 games.  Our activity will change daily and be available from 10:30am – 1:00pm\, and from 2:00pm – 4:30pm. \nFor more information about our Living History Labs\, please contact info@7gables.org.

During this program\, visitors are invited to step back in time and explore Essex County’s extraordinary collection of homes\, buildings\, and artifacts from America’s First Period (1625-1725) of European settlement.  Discover what it was like to live in Essex Country during America’s first century as you navigate these architectural treasures.  Join us for 17th Century Saturdays from June through October 2016 on the first Saturday of the month. \nWith regular admission\, visitors will be able to enjoy a guided tour of The Gables\, tour the gardens and grounds\, and view the Nathaniel Hawthorne birthplace. DESCRIPTION:Part of our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series \nWhen the House of the Seven Gables opened as a museum in 1910\, Caroline Emmerton recognized this importance of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s literary fame in attracting visitors to the site. The tradition continues with author Mark Beauregard who will discuss his new novel\, The Whale: A Love Story\, which explores the intense relationship between Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville and their surprising influence on each other’s work. Hawthorne and Melville were neighbors while Hawthorne was writing The House of the Seven Gables and Melville was finishing Moby-Dick: their passionate friendship shaped their work and changed American literature. \nMark Beauregard has been a journalist\, magazine editor\, and\, most recently\, manager of nonprofit arts and community organizations. SUMMARY:What Are The Ties That Bind? with Henriette Lazaridis
DESCRIPTION:Henriette Lazaridis\, author of The Clover House\, will explore immigration-related themes of exile and nostalgia\, belonging\, and identity from the perspective of a modern Greek-American family. Reflecting on every immigrant’s rite of passage in becoming part of a new country\, her main focus will be on the role that shared stories have in holding families together\, or creating distance between family members. \nHer novel explores the compelling question\, How do we live with xenitia? Xenitia is centered on the Greek concept of exile\, loneliness\, and nostalgia. \nLazaridis’ debut novel The Clover House was published by Ballantine Books in 2013 and was a Boston Globe bestseller and a Target Emerging Authors pick. Her work has appeared in publications including Narrative Magazine\, Salamander\, New England Review\, The Millions\, The New York Times online\, and the Huffington Post. Having taught English at Harvard\, she now teaches at Grub Street in Boston. DESCRIPTION:Part of our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series \nImportant maritime landmarks dot the coastline. The House of the Seven Gables has been one for four centuries. Even more important to maritime safety\, America’s lighthouses have kept countless ships from wrecking\, saved untold lives\, and contributed mightily to the growth and prosperity of the nation. Eric Jay Dolin\, the author of Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America\, will share the dramatic story of these soaring coastal sentinels\, using numerous slides to illuminate the beauty and grandeur of America’s lighthouses. It is a riveting tale of nasty political battles\, technological innovation\, natural disasters\, and war. But most of all it is a story about the male and female keepers\, who\, often with the invaluable assistance of their families\, faithfully kept the lights shining and the fog signals blaring. A book signing for Brilliant Beacons will follow the talk. \nEric Jay Dolin is the author of Leviathan: The History of Whaling In America\, which was chosen as one of the best nonfiction books of 2007 by The Los Angeles Times and The Boston Globe\, and also won the 2007 John Lyman Award for U. S. Maritime History; and Fur\, Fortune\, and Empire: The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America\, which was chosen by The Seattle Times as one of the best nonfiction books of 2010\, and also won the James P. Hanlan Book Award\, given by the New England Historical Association. He is also the author of When America First Met China: An Exotic History of Tea\, Drugs\, and Money in the Age of Sail\, which was chosen by Kirkus Reviews as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of 2012. A graduate of Brown\, Yale\, and MIT\, where he received his Ph.D. in environmental policy\, Dolin lives in Marblehead\, Massachusetts\, with his family.
