SUMMARY:Salem Women's History Day at The House of the Seven Gables
DESCRIPTION:The House of the Seven Gables will commemorate Salem Women’s History Day with a special women’s history tour and two lectures with speakers from the Partnership of Historic Bostons. Space is limited for all events and registration is suggested. \n12:30 – 1:15 pm: Women’s History Tour of The Gables—Free for Salem residents and members; Regular admission applies to all others. \n1:30 – 2:30 pm: The Hidden Domestic Lives of Puritan Women: When you read the spiritual narratives of 17th-century Puritan women\, it’s remarkable to realize that they are very like men’s narratives: completely focused on the search for grace. Women’s narratives mention family as rarely and perfunctorily as men’s narratives do. These were women raising children and creating homesteads in new colonial settlements\, where the domestic labor was unceasing. How did these women live both as independent spiritual seekers–the first American individuals–and as wives and mothers?  Free. \n2:30 – 3:30 pm: Katharine Gibbs – Trailblazing Woman in Business: Katharine Gibbs’ secretarial schools provided educational opportunities for women beginning in the early twentieth century and helped to change the face of the American office. Learn about this fascinating woman and the changing roles of women and work. \n3:30 – 3:45 pm: Women’s History Tour of The Gables—Free for Salem residents and members; Regular admission applies to all others. \nAll events are available on a first come\, first served basis. Registration is not required. For more information email groups@7gables.org\, or call 978-744-0991 ext. 152.

SUMMARY:What Happens When Police Departments Help With Immigration Enforcement?
DESCRIPTION:On March 22nd\, Dr. Nik Theodore\, who recently completed a study on police involvement in immigration enforcement\, will join Salem Police Chief Mary Butler in a discussion about the consequences of this law enforcement partnership. \nDr. Theodore will present results from a 2013 study in which researchers surveyed 2\,000 Latinos in four cities regarding their perceptions of police and public safety\, given instances of police involvement in immigration enforcement. \nCommunity Conversations are free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended. If you have questions about this event\, please contact Ana Nuncio at anuncio@7Gables.org or call 978-744-0991\, ext. 105. \nThe primary goal of The Gables in hosting these dialogues is to encourage all residents and civic leaders of Salem and surrounding communities to listen\, learn\, and share their thoughts on immigration and immigration reform.  The immigration conversations serve as an educational tool to explore some deeply entrenched perceptions and misperceptions that new immigrants and the descendants of earlier generations of immigrants have about each other — and sometimes about themselves and their own heritage. \n*Special thanks to the Northey Street Bed and Breakfast for providing lodging to out-of-town guests for the Community Conversation series. \n*Agradecemos la generosidad de Northey Street Bed and Breakfast por proveer alojamiento para los participantes de esta serie de conversaciones comunitarias.

SUMMARY:Splendor in Marblehead a Century After the Turners by Judy Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series \nIn 1768\, precisely one hundred years after the House of the Gables was built\, craftsmen had likely completed the final decorative embellishments of a new mansion erected across the harbor in Marblehead. Exquisite carvings\, mahogany paneling\, and magnificent hand-painted murals gave the grand new residence an aura of splendor that would have rivaled most New England homes at that time\, just as the Turners’ impressive dwelling would have a century earlier. Join former Lee Mansion curator Judy Anderson for an illustrated talk about the preservation of the splendid house and its hand painted wallpapers over two and a half centuries old. A book about those wall-coverings will be for sale after the talk. \nJudy  Anderson is a social\, cultural and architectural historian who  presents  illustrated  talks  about  18th-century Anglo-American  decorative  arts\,  architecture\,  and social history\, with an emphasis on  Marblehead.  After  thirty years  in the museum field\, she is now the  principal of an educational  non-profit\, Marblehead Architecture Heritage\, as well as  Marblehead Architecture & Heritage Tours. \nMembers of the House of the Seven Gables: Free \nNon-members: $7.00 \nTo reserve your spot for this lecture please fill out the form below. If you have any questions\, please contact Ryan at 978-744-0991 x104
