DESCRIPTION:Get swept into Hawthorne’s tale of guilt\, greed and revenge as the characters from The House of the Seven Gables (1851)\, come to life and recount their stories while you walk through the very house that inspired Hawthorne’s timeless novel. Performances begin every five minutes in The House of the Seven Gables and last approximately 35 minutes. SUMMARY:Deliver Us from Evil: Counter-magic in Early New England
DESCRIPTION:Emerson W. Baker of the Salem State University History Department will talk about why folk magic was far more common in colonial New England than most of us realize.  Daisy wheel marks\, witch bottles\, well-worn shoes by fireplaces or a horseshoe over a doorway are examples of the counter-magic employed to protect homes and families from evil. They are also evidence that New Englanders dabbled in magic\, and feared witches and supernatural forces long after the Salem witch trials ended. \nThe lecture will be followed by a book signing with Dr. Baker and his work\, A Storm of Witchcraft. \nThis lecture is $10.00 for the general public and free for members of The Gables. He has served as an advisor for PBS-TV’s American Experience and Colonial House. Baker is a member of the Gallows Hill Project team who recently confirmed the witch trials execution site\, and he has co-authored an iPhone app on the witchcraft crisis. \n

DESCRIPTION:In this interactive workshop\, participants will explore the idea of “welcome” in our lives\, and how it benefits us to keep our minds and hearts open to new people and experiences.  We will look at the diverse meanings of “welcome” and how we can welcome into our lives the people\, situations and things that heal and calm us\, as time for rest and reflection becomes increasingly elusive in a fast-paced society. Participants will be given tools based in theater\, creative movement\, writing and voice\, to welcome more peace\, and new people and experiences into their lives. Participants are encouraged to wear loose\, comfortable clothing\, soft soled shoes and be prepared to move and have fun! \nEn este taller interactivo\, los participantes explorarán la idea de “bienvenida” en nuestras vidas\, y cómo nos beneficia mantener nuestras mentes y corazones abiertos a nuevas personas y experiencias.  Miraremos los diversos significados de “bienvenida” y cómo podemos acoger en nuestras vidas a las personas\, situaciones y cosas que nos sanan y calman\, ya que el tiempo para el descanso y la reflexión se vuelve cada vez más esquivo en una sociedad trepidante. SUMMARY:Layers of Paint\, Layers of History
DESCRIPTION:Christine Thomson is a local conservator whose specialty is paint analysis. This scientific technique is used in historic buildings to help with restoration work and to share better historical information with staff and visitors alike. Ms. Thomson will talk about the importance and techniques of paint analysis and share her 2016 research findings from The House of the Seven Gables. In 2018\, The Gables celebrates its 350th anniversary and this talk is complementary to the exhibit These Walls Do Talk\, which opens on April 6. \nThis program is being offered for free in partnership with Trails and Sails. \nRegistration for this event is full.
