SUMMARY:Bewitched: A Show\, Statue\, and Icon
DESCRIPTION:The famed television show\, Bewitched\, filmed a series of episodes in Salem in 1970. Though the crew’s time in Salem was short\, the show made a lasting impact. In the episode featuring The House of the Seven Gables\, Darrin and Samantha are followed back to their hotel by an enchanted bed warmer. The police are called and Samantha is forced to help Darrin get out of jail.\nTelevision and pop culture historian Robert Thompson will talk about Bewitched – as a show\, statue\, and icon of classic television. Join us for a talk about this and an overview of the history of television and how it continues to impact us today. \nMembers: Free \nNon-Members: $10.00 \nTo reserve your spot for this lecture please click here; email jarrison@7gables.org\, or call 978-306-7003. \n***After the event\, Adam-Michael James\, author of The Bewitched Continuum\, will be on-hand with his book and additional information about the show! \nThis is the second lecture in our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series. The 2019 exhibit\, Pop! Goes The Gables explored how Hawthorne’s novel and our 1668 mansion have influenced pop culture over the centuries. The lecture series complements the many themes explored in that exhibit.\n### \nRobert J. Thompson is the founding director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture and a Trustee Professor of Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. Dubbed a “pop culture ambassador” by the Associated Press\, Robert Thompson has contributed to hundreds of radio and TV programs and publications. \nThompson is the author or editor of five books: “Television’s Second Golden Age” (Continuum\, 1996); “Prime Time\, Prime Movers” (Little\, Brown\, 1992); “Adventures on Prime Time” (Praeger\, 1990); and “Television Studies” (Praeger 1989). \nhttps://newhouse.syr.edu/faculty-staff/robert-thompson

SUMMARY:Happy Birthday\, Miss Emmerton!
DESCRIPTION:Caroline Osgood Emmerton was born on April 21\, 1866 in Salem\, Mass. Emmerton grew up in a city that was transitioning from its past as a major shipping port to its future as a manufacturing center for both textiles and the leather industry. George Emmerton\, Caroline’s father\, worked in the growing chemical industry. The Salem that Caroline grew up in was the Salem of “The Gilded Age\,” when advances in machinery led to economic growth\, waves of immigration\, and tension around class inequality. These trends influenced Emmerton’s career choice later in life. \nMiss Emmerton founded The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association in April 1910 to preserve historic buildings and provide educational opportunities to newly arriving immigrants to the Derby Street neighborhood. \nWe invite you to join us for a guided tour and learn more! As a perk\, fellow “Carolines” of the world can enjoy free admission for themselves and one guest on April 21\, 2019. \n

SUMMARY:Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968
DESCRIPTION:A mind-expanding dive into a lost chapter of 1968\, featuring the famous and forgotten: Van Morrison\, folkie-turned-cult-leader Mel Lyman\, Timothy Leary\, James Brown\, and many more. \nVan Morrison’s Astral Weeks is an iconic rock album shrouded in legend\, a masterpiece that has touched generations of listeners and influenced everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Martin Scorsese. In his first book\, acclaimed musician and journalist Ryan H. Walsh unearths the album’s fascinating backstory–along with the untold secrets of the time and place that birthed it: Boston 1968. \nOn the 50th anniversary of that tumultuous year\, Walsh’s book follows a criss-crossing cast of musicians and visionaries\, artists and hippie entrepreneurs\, from a young Tufts English professor who walks into a job as a host for TV’s wildest show (one episode required two sets\, each tuned to a different channel) to the mystically inclined owner of radio station WBCN\, who believed he was the reincarnation of a scientist from Atlantis. Most penetratingly powerful of all is Mel Lyman\, the folk-music star who decided he was God\, then controlled the lives of his many followers via acid\, astrology\, and an underground newspaper called Avatar. Astral Weeks is the secret\, wild history of a unique time and place. \nAfter the lecture\, join us for a book signing in our Museum Store. \nMembers: Free \nNon-Members: $10.00 \nTo reserve your spot for this panel please click here; email jarrison@7gables.org\, or call 978-306-7003. \nThis is the kickoff lecture for our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series. The 2019 exhibit\, Pop! Goes The Gables explored how Hawthorne’s novel and our 1668 mansion have influenced pop culture over the centuries. The lecture series complements the many themes explored in that exhibit.\n  \n### \nRyan H. Walsh is a musician and journalist. His culture writing has appeared in the Boston Globe\, Vice\, and Boston Magazine. He was a finalist for the Missouri School of Journalism’s City and Regional Magazine Award for his feature on Van Morrison’s year in Boston\, from which this book developed. His rock band Hallelujah the Hills has won praise from Spin magazine and Pitchfork; collaborated on a song with author Jonathan Lethem; and toured the U.S. extensively over their 10-year existence. The band won a Boston Music Award for Best Rock Artist\, and Walsh has twice won the award for Best Video Direction. He lives in Boston with his wife\, the acclaimed singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler. \n

SUMMARY:Famous First Lines
DESCRIPTION:“Halfway down a by-street of one of our New England towns stands a rusty wooden house\, with seven acutely peaked gables\, facing towards various points of the compass\, and a huge\, clustered chimney in the midst.”\nNathaniel Hawthorne had hoped to finish The House of the Seven Gables by November\, but\, like many writers even today\, finishing a novel on deadline can be difficult. In honor of National Novel Writing Month\, the Witch City Writers will introduce you to famous first lines of historical and modern literature. Join us for 30 minutes of speed writing using those lines as inspiration and conquer the blank page. \nThanks to the generosity of Mass Humanities\, this event is free. Please register below. \nClick here to reserve your spot for this workshop.  For more information email jarrison@7gables.org or call 978-744-0991 ext. 152.
