SUMMARY:Why Comics? From Underground to Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Today Wonder Woman is a globally recognized character and brand. Her character was developed in the Golden Age of Comic Books (c.1930-1950) by William Moulton Marston\, a psychologist from Saugus\, Massachusetts. In Comics Cavalcade #1\, published in December of 1942\, Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor foil a group of Nazi saboteurs who seek to destroy The House of the Seven Gables. In the course of the adventure\, she uses the secret staircase to surprise her foes. In those early days\, the house was more iconic than the hero.\nJoin comics scholar Hillary Chute for a history of comics\, comix\, and graphic novels. Learn about the fearless men and women behind the stories and the influence of comics on today’s culture. \nAfter the lecture\, join us for a book signing in our Museum Store. \nMembers: Free \nNon-Members: $10.00 \nTo reserve your spot for this lecture please click here; email jarrison@7gables.org\, or call 978-306-7003. \nThis is the sixth lecture in our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series. The 2019 exhibit\, Pop! Goes The Gables explored how Hawthorne’s novel and our 1668 mansion have influenced pop culture over the centuries. The lecture series complements the many themes explored in that exhibit.\n \nHillary Chute is an expert on comics and graphic narratives and Distinguished Professor of English and Art + Design at Northeastern University. Her newest book is Why Comics?: From Underground to Everywhere (HarperCollins\, 2017)\, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her other books include Graphic Women: Life Narrative and Contemporary Comics; Outside the Box: Interviews with Contemporary Cartoonists; and Disaster Drawn: Visual Witness\, Comics\, and Documentary Form. She is the Associate Editor of Art Spiegelman’s MetaMaus\, and a comics and graphic novels columnist for the New York Times Book Review. Chute lives in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. \nhttps://www.whycomics.com

SUMMARY:How I Became an Emoji Activist (And You Can\, Too!)
DESCRIPTION:92% of all people online use emoji. Nearly 50% of Instagram posts contain emoji. The “face with tears of joy” emoji was the 2015 Oxford English Dictionary word-of-the-year. These tiny emotive characters are barely two decades old yet have impacted digital communication in a major way. From their inception to quicken text messaging and their evolution into a representation of life as we know it\, emoji are a ubiquitous method of communication across the globe.\nJennifer 8. Lee is one of the founders of Emojination\, a small group of activists whose motto is “Emoji for the people\, by the people.” This global network works to make the emoji approval process an inclusive and representative process. She’ll be sharing her story about how her research on American Chinese food for The Fortune Cookie Chronicles turned into a passion for approval for the dumpling emoji and beyond. It will be a thought-provoking discussion on how this new digital linguistic media is shaping the world around us\, as well as the minds of generations to come. \nAfter the lecture\, Jenny will be signing copies of her book in our Museum Store. \nMembers: Free\nNon-Members: $10.00 \nTo reserve your spot for this event please click here; email jarrison@7gables.org\, or call 978-306-7003. \nThis is the third lecture in our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series. The 2019 exhibit\, Pop! Goes The Gables explored how Hawthorne’s novel and our 1668 mansion have influenced pop culture over the centuries. The lecture series complements the many themes explored in that exhibit.\n### \nWhen Jenny learned there was no dumpling emoji from Yiying Lu\, she felt like the system was broken. She joined the Unicode consortium and is now a vice-chair of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee. She believes in giving voice to the people on issues of emoji. Jenny 8. Lee is a vice-chair of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee as well as the cofounder of the literary studio\, Plympton\, an author\, and documentary producer.\nhttps://www.jennifer8lee.com\nhttps://www.emojination.org

SUMMARY:Happy Birthday\, Miss Emmerton!
DESCRIPTION:Caroline Osgood Emmerton was born on April 21\, 1866 in Salem\, Mass. Emmerton grew up in a city that was transitioning from its past as a major shipping port to its future as a manufacturing center for both textiles and the leather industry. George Emmerton\, Caroline’s father\, worked in the growing chemical industry. The Salem that Caroline grew up in was the Salem of “The Gilded Age\,” when advances in machinery led to economic growth\, waves of immigration\, and tension around class inequality. These trends influenced Emmerton’s career choice later in life. \nMiss Emmerton founded The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association in April 1910 to preserve historic buildings and provide educational opportunities to newly arriving immigrants to the Derby Street neighborhood. \nWe invite you to join us for a guided tour and learn more! As a perk\, fellow “Carolines” of the world can enjoy free admission for themselves and one guest on April 21\, 2019. \n

SUMMARY:Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968
DESCRIPTION:A mind-expanding dive into a lost chapter of 1968\, featuring the famous and forgotten: Van Morrison\, folkie-turned-cult-leader Mel Lyman\, Timothy Leary\, James Brown\, and many more. \nVan Morrison’s Astral Weeks is an iconic rock album shrouded in legend\, a masterpiece that has touched generations of listeners and influenced everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Martin Scorsese. In his first book\, acclaimed musician and journalist Ryan H. Walsh unearths the album’s fascinating backstory–along with the untold secrets of the time and place that birthed it: Boston 1968. \nOn the 50th anniversary of that tumultuous year\, Walsh’s book follows a criss-crossing cast of musicians and visionaries\, artists and hippie entrepreneurs\, from a young Tufts English professor who walks into a job as a host for TV’s wildest show (one episode required two sets\, each tuned to a different channel) to the mystically inclined owner of radio station WBCN\, who believed he was the reincarnation of a scientist from Atlantis. Most penetratingly powerful of all is Mel Lyman\, the folk-music star who decided he was God\, then controlled the lives of his many followers via acid\, astrology\, and an underground newspaper called Avatar. Astral Weeks is the secret\, wild history of a unique time and place. \nAfter the lecture\, join us for a book signing in our Museum Store. \nMembers: Free \nNon-Members: $10.00 \nTo reserve your spot for this panel please click here; email jarrison@7gables.org\, or call 978-306-7003. \nThis is the kickoff lecture for our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series. The 2019 exhibit\, Pop! Goes The Gables explored how Hawthorne’s novel and our 1668 mansion have influenced pop culture over the centuries. The lecture series complements the many themes explored in that exhibit.\n  \n### \nRyan H. Walsh is a musician and journalist. His culture writing has appeared in the Boston Globe\, Vice\, and Boston Magazine. He was a finalist for the Missouri School of Journalism’s City and Regional Magazine Award for his feature on Van Morrison’s year in Boston\, from which this book developed. His rock band Hallelujah the Hills has won praise from Spin magazine and Pitchfork; collaborated on a song with author Jonathan Lethem; and toured the U.S. extensively over their 10-year existence. The band won a Boston Music Award for Best Rock Artist\, and Walsh has twice won the award for Best Video Direction. He lives in Boston with his wife\, the acclaimed singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler. \n
