SUMMARY:The House of the Seven Gables: An Illustrated Classic
DESCRIPTION:Jack Butterworth\, the owner of one of the largest collections of comic art in New England\, will share some insider stories behind the two comic book versions of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel “The House of Seven Gables” Sunday\, Dec. 1\, at 2 p.m. at the House of Seven Gables.\nA Salem resident\, Butterworth is a former newspaper reporter and former occasional comic book writer as well as a collector. \nHe became a serious comic book enthusiast in 1974 in the exciting days when many of the earliest comic book creators were still alive. He met the surviving co-founder of Classics Illustrated\, Mike Kanter\, and two of its former art directors\, Jerry Iger and L.B. Cole\, and he has stories to share about them all. \nPeople attending will have the opportunity to see some of his pages of original art from “The House of Seven Gables\,” “Kidnapped\,” “Toilers of the Sea” and other Classics Illustrated publications. \nSome people may be aware that Classics Illustrated published two graphic versions of “The House of Seven Gables” in 1947 and again in 1958. \nThose versions reflect the history of a company that was ahead of its time in many ways. \nClassics Illustrated was one of the first comic book companies to hire women editors\, writers and artists\, they published the first graphic novels in America – and they published the first horror comics as well. \nThese are characters and stories that Hawthorne himself might have liked – and Butterworth looks forward to sharing the history and the fun. \nMembers: Free\nPublic: $10 \n  \nTickets available here: https://store.7gables.org/EventPurchase.aspx

SUMMARY:Secure the Shadow: Victorian Spirit and Post-Mortem Photography
DESCRIPTION:Early photography had a magical quality\, even for those who understood the science behind it. For many in the nineteenth century\, the relationship between science and the supernatural was unclear. Sympathetic photographers and charlatans set up a brisk business “securing the shadow\,” memorializing deceased loved ones or producing images purported to be from beyond the grave.\nJoin local historian Bethany Groff Dorau for illustrated exploration of Victorian photography from the moment of death and beyond. \nMembers: Free \nNon-Members: $10.00 \nTo reserve your spot for this panel please click here; email jarrison@7gables.org\, or call 978-306-7003. \nThis is the final lecture in our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables Series. The 2019 exhibit\, Pop! Goes The Gables explored how Hawthorne’s novel and our 1668 mansion have influenced pop culture over the centuries. The lecture series complements the many themes explored in that exhibit.\n### \nBethany Groff Dorau is the author of A Newburyport Marine in World War I: The Life and Legacy of Eben Bradbury (June 2018\, History Press)\, A Brief History of Old Newbury (History Press)\, and a primary contributor to the Defining Documents in American History Series. \nShe is the North Shore Regional Site Manager for Historic New England\, based at the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm in Newbury\, and a recipient of the Pioneer in Preservation Award from the Essex National Heritage Commission and the North of Boston CVB Leadership Award. \nShe has published articles in the New England Quarterly\, the Encyclopedia of American History\, and Historic New England Magazine. She holds an MA in History from the University of Massachusetts and lives in West Newbury with her family.
