We look forward to welcoming Ellen Snyder-Grenier to discuss her book\, The House on Henry Street: The Enduring Life of a Lower East Side Settlement.\nThis illustrated talk will focus on Henry Street Settlement’s early years\, told within the context of the settlement house movement: part of a Progressive-Era crusade dedicated to tackling the problems of poverty by “settling” in and serving impoverished communities at a time of skyrocketing immigration\, urbanization\, and industrialization. \nRegistration is free. It was founded in 1893 by 26-year-old nurse Lillian Wald\, whose visit to the tenement bedside of a dying woman—abandoned by her doctor because she could not pay her fee—awakened her to the depth of poverty and inequality on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and the desperate needs of its largely Jewish immigrant population. Wald imagined a place where all have equal access to healthcare\, and where divides of ethnicity\, race\, and class were bridged. \nWald’s enterprise was invigorated by the work of other social reformers and human rights activists\, the rise of social work\, and the professionalization of nursing. It put her in the vanguard of the settlement house movement and at the forefront of health care and the fight for social justice\, and launched an enduring institution. Its story is as relevant today as it was more than 125 years ago. \nEllen M. Snyder-Grenier is a national-award-winning curator and writer\, and principal of REW & Co. She directs research projects\, develops museum exhibitions\, and writes on urban history\, with a focus on social justice. The author of an award-winning history of Brooklyn\, Snyder-Grenier is a Fellow of the New York Academy of History.

At this time we are offering two options: an online virtual stream from the House lawn (1 hour of yoga and meditation) via zoom link ($10) that will be provided to you via email once you sign up OR a limited option to attend in person (24 people max: first come first serve\, no exceptions) ($20). DESCRIPTION:Looking for a creative outlet for your family during these trying times? The House of the Seven Gables and Salem Arts Association is hosting a Gables-themed family art contest. Paint\, draw\, photograph\, sculpt – whatever moves you! We can’t wait to see how The Gables inspires YOU!\nJudges from the Salem Arts Association will pick the winners in the following age groups: \n\n7 and under\n8 -10\n11 – 13\n14 – 18\n\nWinners will receive a family pack of passes to The House of the Seven Gables AND their work will be displayed at the annual En Plein Air show hosted by the Salem Arts Association (date TBD). \nWork can be submitted in two ways: \n\nDigital or scanned projects can be emailed to jarrison@7gables.org\nProjects can be dropped off in-person at 115 Derby Street Monday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Please call or text 413-530-0831 when you drop off so we can gather up your project.\n\nProjects are due by 10:00 a.m. on April 24. Judging will take place as soon as it is safe for the Salem Arts Association judges to gather. \nAs we receive projects\, we’ll post them up on our joint social media to help brighten up our community with your work!

How did they learn from their mistakes?\nPut on your thinking cap AND hard hat as you…\n– Learn about the tools of the trade and which materials they used most.\n– Experiment with different construction techniques at each of our hands-on stations using popular building toys.\n– Fold and decorate your own paper house to take home. \nJoin us daily at 11:30 & 1:30 for “Why Do We Have Gables?” to explore which parts of historic buildings are the strongest. Kids will be making shapes with their hands and bodies in this fun\, interactive program. \nThis special programming will be offered on February 15-23 between 11:00-3:00 and is part of your general admission.
