SUMMARY:Trails and Sails: Ben Shallop
DESCRIPTION:Join The House of the Seven Gables\, Salem Historical Society\, and St. Peter’s-San Pedro Church for an afternoon book talk with local author\, Benjamin Shallop\, featuring his most recent publication\, The Founding of Salem\, City of Peace. In the 1620s the land that would one day become the Massachusetts North Shore was a harsh frontier. Native Americans\, fishermen\, and religious exiles struggled to survive while speculators strived to profit off the vast resources of this New World. \n\nOut of the disease\, greed\, and chaos of the era would emerge one of the most unique cities in the world. Learn how a working-class salter named Roger Conant became the first governor of Massachusetts and why Miles Standish tried to end this new colony of fishermen with brute force. Meet the woman who led the Massachusett people through their most trying times but whose name was ultimately lost to recorded history. \n\nThis event is free as part of Trails and Sails\, but registration is encouraged. Please note: This event is being held at St. Peter’s-San Pedro Church at 24 St. Peter Street\, Salem\, MA 01970. \n> Click here to reserve your ticket<

SUMMARY:Community Conversations: Coastal Communities and Climate Change Harbor Tour
DESCRIPTION:Climate change impacts us all\, but in different ways and with a variety of outcomes. This year’s Community Conversations series will focus on some of these impacts\, existing and proposed efforts to mitigate the negative changes\, and what we can do as individuals to address climate change in our communities. Join the Gables as we host Bill Golden aboard The Schooner Fame as we tour the harbor and discuss the existential threat to coastal communities of storm surge\, sea level rise and storm water caused by melting glaciers and the increased destructive capability of storms. This discussion will focus on scientific data\, available coastal resiliency options\, public policy development and political will. We will also discuss the impacts on real estate\, insurance and municipal tax base and what other regions in the United States and the world are doing to address climate change related flooding. Space is limited and registration is required. If cost is a barrier\, please contact Zoe Quinn at zquinn@7gables.org. \nBill Golden is currently an adjunct full professor at the school of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences SUNY Stony Brook\, a Member of the executive committee of the New York New Jersey Storm Surge Working Group and Manager of the Boston Harbor Regional Storm Surge Working Group. Bill has worked on environmental issues at every level of government from the White House to City Hall. Bill filed the lawsuit to clean up Boston Harbor that created the MWRA and\, as a Massachusetts State Senator\, sponsored environmental legislation\, championed the establishment and expansion of commuter rail and ferry service and served as the chair of a statewide successful solid waste referendum. Bill has also owned renewable energy businesses in Nevada and Oregon and an international environmental services business out of Jakarta Indonesia. Bill is the Director and Co-founder of Real Pirates Salem\, named “Best New Attraction” in Yankee’s 2023 Best in New England Travel Guide. Bill has degrees from Yale University\, (BA) Harvard University (MPA) and BU School of School of Law (JD) \n> Click here to register <
