DESCRIPTION:In this two part lecture series\, Oleksandra Kovalchuk\, the Director of Development of the Odesa Fine Arts Museum\, delves into Ukraine’s rich artistic heritage\, symbolic traditions\, and the remarkable resilience displayed in times of the full scale invasion by the Russian Federation. From the courageous efforts of museums during the war to the cultural significance of bread in traditional and modern art\, these lectures provide a comprehensive insight into the spirit and identity of Ukrainian people and history.  \n  \nThis lecture explores the dynamic role of Ukrainian museums in the face of conflict\, focusing not only on their efforts to protect collections but also on their evolving mission to serve communities and support artists. We will delve into how these institutions have become centers of resilience\, rethinking their traditional roles amidst the challenges of war. \n  \nAll funds go to Dobro New England to support humanitarian aid to Ukraine. \n  \n> Click here to register <\n  \nAbout the Presenter \nOleksandra Kovalchuk is the Director of Development at the Odesa Fine Arts Museum\, leader of the non-governmental organization Museum for Change\, and acting member of the Odesa city council. After the beginning of a full-scale military invasion\, Ms. Kovalchuk arrived in Massachusetts with her husband and son. Since then she has been working to raise awareness about Ukrainian culture and the efforts of museums to protect Ukrainian heritage. During the years of war\, she has been a presenter in such institutions as Boston University\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, the Peabody Essex Museum\, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art\, and The House of Seven Gables.

Join The Gables for a special “Behind the Scenes” tour where you will get into spaces the public generally isn’t allowed\, hear some of the lesser-known stories\, and enjoy The Gables like few ever have! \n  \nThis is a 90-minute tour in which you will be standing and walking on uneven floors\, ducking\, and maneuvering through areas with limited lighting. Hard hats and flashlights will be provided and are required. A waiver will be presented to you upon your arrival. DESCRIPTION:Sophia Peabody Hawthorne’s painting “Flight Into Egypt” has been restored and is returning to The House of the Seven Gables! \n  \nOn Saturday December 2 at 4 p.m. there will be a reception with a short presentation about the conservation process and what was learned during it in the Seamans Visitor Center\, followed by an unveiling of the restored work in the parlor of the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion. Period and season-appropriate refreshments will be served. It will be a festive kick-off to the holiday season! SUMMARY:Deck the Halls: Female Abolitionists and the Evolution of Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Join Gables Board Member\, Ken Turino\, as we delve into the intriguing and intertwined histories of female abolitionists and our modern Christmas traditions!\n  \nWhat we think of as the traditional trappings of Christmas celebrations were just beginning in the first half to mid-nineteenth century. It was actually New England’s female abolitionists who played a large role in the development of modern American Christmas traditions. In fact\, they were leaders. These abolitionists\, including Maria Chapman\, Lydia Marie Child\, and Abby Kelly hosted anti-slavery society Christmas Fairs – one of the earliest traditions associated with Christmas in America. It was at these fairs that most Americans first encountered a Christmas tree and the greenery that those who celebrate the holiday now so commonly used as decorations. The female abolitionists also promoted the idea of gift-giving at their fairs\, a central part of our traditions today. These women created strong networks that stretched across the then United States and into Europe. They promoted abolitionism while creating goods for sale and organizing the fairs. All this helped move women out of the designated domestic sphere of the home (not without controversy) into the economy\, changing forever the role of women in society\, while simultaneously creating the holiday traditions many Americans hold dear today. \n  \nTickets are $15 general admission and free for Gables members. \n  \n> Click here to reserve your ticket<
