As this will be outdoors\, please dress accordingly. \n– Free ground passes to the historic site.* \n– A Valentine’s workshop with local artist Linda Abbene in The Gables’ Visitor Center. Come make a valentine card for someone special. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 9 at 2 P.M.\, The House of the Seven Gables invites you to Steeped in History: Love Brews Here! \n  \nEnjoy an afternoon tea service catered by the Vintage Tea & Cake Company\, including a variety of teas\, finger sandwiches\, and sweets. In celebration of Valentine’s Day\, there will be a staged reading of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s love letters. Delve into the romantic courtship between Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Sophia Peabody\, and explore his beloved friendship with fellow author Herman Melville in letters sent during the creations of The House of the Seven Gables and Moby Dick. Attendees will also have the opportunity to decorate a custom hand fan to take home and learn the secret language of the fan. \n  \nTickets are $70 for Gables members and $85 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:A documentary film screening to support Ukraine\nWinemaking is one of many Ukrainian industries to suffer from the 2022 Russian invasion. The documentary “Wounded Land: The Unbroken Spirit of Ukraine” will be screened which tells the stories of Ukrainian vintners and farmers working to keep their entrepreneurial spirits alive.  \nParticipants will receive a commemorative wine glass with a pour of Artwine white sec sparkling wine (90 pt rating James Suckling) from some of the last bottles rescued prior to the fall of Bakhmut.  \nUkrainian wines\, some of the last in the US\, will be available for donation in a wine pull\, as well as an auction of rare bottles. Join The Gables for a special “Behind the Scenes” tour where you will get into spaces the public generally isn’t allowed\, hear some of the lesser-known stories\, and enjoy The Gables like few ever have! \n  \nThis is a 90-minute tour in which you will be standing and walking on uneven floors\, ducking\, and maneuvering through areas with limited lighting. SUMMARY:Member Event: Tour of the Balch House
DESCRIPTION:If you’re from the North Shore\, you’ve grown up passing this house and always wondered what it was like up close. Now is your chance! Join your fellow Gables members for a tour of Historic Beverly’s Balch House. One of the oldest wood-frame houses in the country\, the Balch House is evocative of early colonial life. \nJohn Balch was born in England in 1579. His family immigrated to America in 1623. They lived on this property beginning in 1636. What we see today is a product of its restoration as much as its origins. The house is composed of structures from three distinct architectural periods\, the 17th\, 18th\, and 19th centuries. The Balch Family Association purchased and took possession of the Balch House in 1916. Upon council from Norman Isham and William Sumner Appleton the house was “restored” and thus became an icon of the colonial revival period’s approach to historic preservation. \nThe tour (exterior and interior) is on May 10th at 10:30AM. The Balch House is opening especially for Gables members so we will have exclusive access. Gables members only. No guests. Join The Gables for a special “Behind the Scenes” tour where you will get into spaces the public generally isn’t allowed\, hear some of the lesser-known stories\, and enjoy The Gables like few ever have! \n  \nThis is a 90-minute tour in which you will be standing and walking on uneven floors\, ducking\, and maneuvering through areas with limited lighting.
