SUMMARY:Pequot War and the First Muster: An Evening of Reflection\, History\, and Community
DESCRIPTION:The House of the Seven Gables is proud to invite you to an evening of reflection\, history\, and community. Special guest speakers from the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation\, alongside local Author and Historian\, Benjamin Shallop\, will discuss Salem’s role in and the lasting impact of the Pequot War (1636-1638) ahead of the First Muster commemoration on April 11th. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m for guests to enjoy an Indigenous menu by Nakai Clearwater Northup of Rez Life Outdoors\, followed by the program. At the program’s conclusion\, guests will be able to purchase signed copies of The Founding of Salem: City of Peace. \n  \nThis event supports ongoing efforts of the City of Salem\, the Massachusett Tribe\, and The House of the Seven Gables to foster reciprocal and ongoing relationships with Northeast Woodlands tribes\, confront legacies of violence and colonialism\, and reflect on how we can better understand and commemorate events like the First Muster. \n  \nThe evening will open with a land acknowledgement and remarks from Visitor Services Manager\, Tanya Rose Lane\, who will also serve as moderator. Our panel will feature four distinguished speakers\, Benjamin Shallop\, Author of The Founding of Salem: City of Peace\, Connor P. Smith\, Educator\, Rashad Young\, Director of Language for Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation\, and Michael Thomas\, Cultural Competency Expert and former Chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council. \n  \nThis event is free but space is limited. First come\, first served.
