SUMMARY:A Tea for Caroline
DESCRIPTION:$95 for Gables members; $110 for nonmembers\nPlease join us at The House of the Seven Gables on Sunday April 30th for our Spring Fundraiser\, a tea to celebrate Gables founder Caroline Emmerton’s birthday. We are also celebrating a generous grant from the Wyeth Foundation for American Art to restore Flight Into Egypt\, a Sophia Peabody Hawthorne painting believed to be from Caroline’s collection. Before her marriage to Nathaniel Hawthorne\, Sophia was one of America’s first professional women artists. She exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum and was known for her oil paintings\, illustrations\, and sculptures. This is the first in a series of conservation projects planned for paintings related to the women of the Gables. Ticket fees for this event will go towards this conservation program. \nCome and enjoy the spring gardens and see some of the paintings before enjoying a brief presentation on Sophia’s life and work with an afternoon tea service catered by Ferreira Foods and teas provided by Jolie Tea Company. \nAll proceeds benefit conservation and preservation programs for The House of the Seven Gables. \nPlease register early as there is limited seating available.  \n> Click here to reserve your ticket <\n\nTo read more about the grant from the Wyeth Foundation for American Art\, click here.

SUMMARY:Community Conversation - New Immigrant and Refugee Visions Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Community Conversation – New Immigrant and Refugee Visions Film Screening and Discussion\nOur September 19 Community Conversations center on two films from New Immigrant and Refugee Visions (NIRV). The two short documentaries provide a unique insider’s perspective on the integration challenges immigrants face and the contributions they make to our culture\, economy and social fabric. Michael Sheridan\, the Founding Director of NIRV\, will provide insight about the makers and subjects. The viewing will be followed by discussions in both Spanish and English. \nFilms:\n \nRhythms of Respect\nFilmmaker and scholar-activist Katsyris Rivera Kientz works closely with the Puerto Rican diaspora in the United States on issues related to Puerto Rican cultural identity. Her film highlights Puerto Rican dancer\, musician\, educator\, and cultural activist\, Jorge Arce\, who fosters inclusive communities by bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to learn about Caribbean culture. \n  \n  \n \n  \nShe’s an American Child\nFilmmaker Rafael DeLeon is co-founder of The Latino Support Network and producer of the local TV show Pathways to Integration. His film tells the story of a mother and daughter who have immigrated from the Dominican Republic to Lynn\, MA and the dilemma the daughter faces related to identity and legal status. \n  \n  \nThank you to Rockland Trust Bank for their generous sponsorship of our Community Conversations event series. \n \n  \n>>This event is free to everyone. SUMMARY:Tituba Today: A Discussion with Dave Tamanini\, author of "Tituba: The Intentional Witch of Salem"
DESCRIPTION:How do the Salem witch trials relate to today? This may seem like an odd question\, but to author Dave Tamanini\, the 1690s are not so far removed from the 2020s! The themes of racism\, fear\, and hysteria still live on over 300 years later. \nDave Tamanini grew up an avid reader of history and fiction alike\, and began his writing career as a high schooler. However\, his career path took him on a very different journey that led him to work in civil rights and law. After a successful career advocating for others\, Tamanini has returned to his writing and published the historical fiction novel\, Tituba: The Intentional Witch of Salem in 2020. \nJoin us as we welcome Tamanini to talk about the influence his civil rights career had on his writing\, how he chose Tituba as a focus for his writing\, how he became a published author\, and what he hopes this work can demonstrate to the modern audience. This event will be both interview and Q&A in style\, so come with your questions about the book\, his career\, and writing in general! There is no charge for this event\, but registration is requested. \nTituba: The Intentional Witch of Salem is for sale in our gift shop and will also be available for sale at a book signing to follow the presentation. \n>>Register here<<
