SUMMARY:Tituba Today: A Discussion with Dave Tamanini\, author of "Tituba: The Intentional Witch of Salem"
DESCRIPTION:How do the Salem witch trials relate to today? This may seem like an odd question\, but to author Dave Tamanini\, the 1690s are not so far removed from the 2020s! The themes of racism\, fear\, and hysteria still live on over 300 years later. \nDave Tamanini grew up an avid reader of history and fiction alike\, and began his writing career as a high schooler. However\, his career path took him on a very different journey that led him to work in civil rights and law. After a successful career advocating for others\, Tamanini has returned to his writing and published the historical fiction novel\, Tituba: The Intentional Witch of Salem in 2020. \nJoin us as we welcome Tamanini to talk about the influence his civil rights career had on his writing\, how he chose Tituba as a focus for his writing\, how he became a published author\, and what he hopes this work can demonstrate to the modern audience. This event will be both interview and Q&A in style\, so come with your questions about the book\, his career\, and writing in general! There is no charge for this event\, but registration is requested. \nTituba: The Intentional Witch of Salem is for sale in our gift shop and will also be available for sale at a book signing to follow the presentation. \n>>Register here<<

SUMMARY:The Struggle for Soviet Jewry and the Making of a Local Émigré Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Salem Ancestry Days as we welcome Dan Eshet and Regina Kazyulina to talk about one of the many immigrant communities on the North Shore. Since the end of the 1980s\, more than 10\,000 Jewish refugees from the former Soviet Union have settled in the Greater Boston area. Their arrival represented the culmination of more than two decades of protest across the country aimed at freeing Jews from Soviet persecution and antisemitism. Their talk will examine this group’s history and the human rights campaign waged on their behalf\, while at the same time situating both within the larger story of Jewish migration from Eastern Europe. \nDan Eshet is the program director at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Salem State University. He has written and lectured extensively on human rights\, modern Jewish history and the Holocaust. \nRegina Kazyulina is a program research associate at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Salem State University. Her work focuses on gender and the lived experiences of Soviet civilians. \nTickets are $10 for nonmembers. Member tickets are free. \n>>Click here to reserve your tickets<<

SUMMARY:Deliver Us from Evil: Counter-magic in Early New England
DESCRIPTION:Emerson W. Baker of the Salem State University History Department will talk about why folk magic was far more common in colonial New England than most of us realize.  Daisy wheel marks\, witch bottles\, well-worn shoes by fireplaces or a horseshoe over a doorway are examples of the counter-magic employed to protect homes and families from evil. They are also evidence that New Englanders dabbled in magic\, and feared witches and supernatural forces long after the Salem witch trials ended. \nThe lecture will be followed by a book signing with Dr. Baker and his work\, A Storm of Witchcraft. \nThis lecture is $10.00 for the general public and free for members of The Gables. Click here to purchase advance tickets.  \nFor more information\, email jarrison@7gables.org\, or call 978-744-0991 ext. 152. \n  \nEmerson “Tad” Baker is interim dean of Graduate and Professional Studies and a professor of History at Salem State University.  He is the award-winning author of many works on the history of and archaeology of early New England\, including A Storm of Witchcraft: The Salem Trials and the American Experience. He has served as an advisor for PBS-TV’s American Experience and Colonial House. Baker is a member of the Gallows Hill Project team who recently confirmed the witch trials execution site\, and he has co-authored an iPhone app on the witchcraft crisis. \n
