SUMMARY:Member Event: Tour of the Balch House
DESCRIPTION:If you’re from the North Shore\, you’ve grown up passing this house and always wondered what it was like up close. Now is your chance! Join your fellow Gables members for a tour of Historic Beverly’s Balch House. One of the oldest wood-frame houses in the country\, the Balch House is evocative of early colonial life. \nJohn Balch was born in England in 1579. His family immigrated to America in 1623. They lived on this property beginning in 1636. What we see today is a product of its restoration as much as its origins. The house is composed of structures from three distinct architectural periods\, the 17th\, 18th\, and 19th centuries. The Balch Family Association purchased and took possession of the Balch House in 1916. Upon council from Norman Isham and William Sumner Appleton the house was “restored” and thus became an icon of the colonial revival period’s approach to historic preservation. \nThe tour (exterior and interior) is on May 10th at 10:30AM. The Balch House is opening especially for Gables members so we will have exclusive access. Gables members only. No guests. Registration is required. \nSOLD OUT\nTo join the waitlist\, please email development@7gables.org\n  \nNot a member? Click here to join.

SUMMARY:Member Event: Early New England Timekeeping & Two Clocks of The Gables
DESCRIPTION:Join Andover clock expert\, Bob Frishman\, to hear the enlightening story of how Salem told time during its early years. No clocks or watches came with the Pilgrims and Puritans\, but decades later there were ticking clocks in local towers and homes\, all set on bright days by sundials and “noon marks”. \nBob recently donated his services to restore our antique grandfather and lantern clocks to good running order — we probably will hear their bells during his lecture — and he will describe the work he did to bring them back to life. This educational\, entertaining\, and non-technical program includes more than one hundred images showing early New England clocks and the places they stood. \nDirectly after the presentation\, Bob will offer verbal descriptions and “Roadshow” valuations for old clocks and watches brought in by the audience (no battery-powered or plug-ins\, please). \nFor more information about Bob’s forty-plus years as a “horologist”\, studying and practicing the science of timekeeping\, visit www.bell-time.com \nFree to Gables members and their guests. \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT\n  \nNot a member? Click here to join.
