Nathaniel Hawthorne: America’s First Goth

Long before black eyeliner and vampire aesthetics, Nathaniel Hawthorne was wading through the fog of America’s moral and psychological darkness as he wandered the streets of Salem. Thomas O’Brien Vallor believes that Hawthorne’s brooding prose and obsession with the darker side of human nature earned him the title of America’s first goth.

For more than twenty years, Thomas has been a historian and occultist in Salem, MA. Coming from a background of witchcraft, he’s experienced in officiating weddings and writing rituals. He’s the creator of Satanic Salem Walking Tours. You’ll find him featured in media such as Travel Channel, Discovery Science, Vice News, CW, and TSTTV.
