Description
This series of pencil tracings was created by Sophia Peabody Hawthorne for the Concord Fair around 1860. The images being traced are from an 1817 translation of Hediod’s Theogany. The cover image of the collection is especially impressive. It was created by Una Hawthorne – the oldest child of Sophia and Nathaniel – and likely was intended to be sold at the fair.
This piece is an example of how the Hawthorne family occupied themselves with various creative endeavors – in addition to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writings.
