Description
Like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow graduated from Bowdoin College; the two were longtime literary friends. This first edition of Longfellow’s work may have been a gift to Sophia. This is one of the few books we have in our collection with Sophia Peabody Hawthorne’s inscription. Note that in November of 1858 Sophia, her husband and children were in Rome on an excursion through Italy. This trip would eventually inspire Hawthorne to write the last novel published in his life – The Marble Faun.
