James T. Fields manuscript
Description
This book contains the handwritten manuscript of a short biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne, written by his publisher and friend, James T. Fields. The first page of the Fields manuscript shows the writer at work making alterations to the piece. That Fields is using different ink types indicates that he was likely editing the piece over a span of time, returning to it when he had some new thought. On the flyleaf inside the front cover of the Fields manuscript is the opening paragraph of the finished product, evidently added after much of the work had been completed.
