Description

In 1958 the House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association purchased this home, the former residence of the Hawthorne family and the home in which Nathaniel Hawthorne, himself, was born. To better preserve the building, it was lifted off its foundation on Union Street and moved to the House of the Seven Gables campus a few blocks away. During the move, the house became a bit smaller. One side was removed to allow the building to maneuver the streets of Salem more easily; once the Hawthorne Birthplace arrived at its new home, the two pieces were reconnected.
