Turner Hall Demolition, Film Clip, 1966

Date: 1968

Type: Film

Categories: ,

Description

In 1966, the old bethel that once housed Caroline Emmerton’s settlement classes – then called Turner Hall – was demolished.

The demolition was the result of concern for the safety of the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion only a few feet away. Earlier that year, a structure located behind the Hawthorne Birthplace burned to the ground, sparking fear for our historic site. Since most of the settlement activities had already been moved across Derby Street to the newly acquired Caroline O. Emmerton Hall, the old bethel was demolished.

This film was a surprise find in our archives. The full video is 21 minutes long and can be seen by request.
